# BarrelCam I was gathering RPi Camera components (for the [[OctoPrint]]er), and noticed this nifty _round_ touchscreen: https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/hyperpixel-round?variant=39381081882707 ![The obverse of a 2.1" diameter round touchscreen, with many colored pixels lit up and the logo "HyperPixel" ](hyperpixel-round-on-white-1_1500x1500_crop_center.webp) ![The reverse of the HyperPixel, with an attached Raspberry Pi Zero W v1.1](hyperpixel-round-on-white-3_1500x1500_crop_center.webp) Being enamored with old cameras, the first thing I wondered is if I could make an entire camera that would look like a lens (or a small "barrel"). I also found a perfectly-sized glass dome in a thrift store, and that led me to wonder the second thing: could I use this same display to create a [Pepper's Ghost](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper%27s_ghost)? Could I make ghosts of the photos I take with the camera? And, as with all ideas, this then grew out of hand: could I detach the camera bits from the display bits, and have the ghost part be operable without being too bulky? Could I insert a third component between the rear screen and the front camera, being a thermal printer for on-the-go photo printing? Oh, and I wonder if there's a shield/hat thing I can get for RPi that adds a hot-mounting SD card (for photo storage) So that's the idea. I have a few thrifty parts in a bin together. #needs-photo ## See Also - https://www.veeb.ch/projects/the-valley-beneath-the-pepper-dome - https://mitxela.com/projects/thermal_paper_polaroid - https://hackaday.io/project/194024-custom-handheld-pi-zero-hq-camera - https://hackaday.com/2023/11/20/cinepi-project-promises-open-source-movie-making/ - https://github.com/cinepi/libcamera - https://github.com/jdc-cunningham/modular-pi-cam/tree/master - https://hackaday.io/project/194905-modular-pi-cam - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjwxFNUQzx0
